Baldwin Center Experience

When I first got to the Baldwin Center I had no idea what to expect. I've never volunteered at any kind of soup kitchen before, or even been to one, so for me this was a whole new experience. I actually assumed when we were there we'd be directly working with people, helping them more so. But to my surprise when we were there was an off time for lunch so it was empty. They were people walking around busily... doing things to prepare for dinner I think. That I did expect.

When we got to talk to the one who was running our visit I learned more about the Baldwin Center than what I thought we would. I couldn't believe the range of things they offered to people in the Pontiac area. Or for that matter how bad it was in the Pontiac area...
I've been there for concerts a couple times, and when I'm out with friends, but that doesn't really expose you to the real city. I had no idea there were so many people in the area who were in need of help. I did notice that even though the Baldwin Center offers a lot it still isn't in the best shape. Neither really is the clothes closet that we worked in. I think that money could be donated just to help create a better environment for the Baldwin Center to help others. Maybe even then they could create an area for over night staying...at least for some people in the community. That's the only thing I think the Baldwin Center is missing.
